Company allocates up to $565,000 to five school districts
BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA - October 1st, 2014 – Chevron Canada Limited (Chevron) announced today plans to expand the Fuel Your School program in British Columbia, Canada. In expanding the successful program, the 105 schools in the Surrey School District who received over $200,000 in funding support from Chevron last year will be joined by the Burnaby, Coquitlam, North Vancouver and West Vancouver school districts. This program will support schools and students within the cities of Surrey, White Rock, Burnaby, Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, Port Moody, Anmore, Belcarra, Bowen Island, North Vancouver, West Vancouver and Lions Bay.
In expanding the Fuel Your School program to five Canadian school districts, Chevron will allocate up to $565,000 to the program in 2014.
“No matter the economic climate, investment in our students’ future is a priority,” says Chevron Canada Representative, Adrien Byrne. “Chevron is proud to be able to support British Columbia schools and help educators with the classroom resources they need to positively impact the lives of students and prepare them for future success.”
“The Fuel Your School program provides an amazing opportunity for teachers to bring innovative learning projects to life” says Amy Coupal, CEO of My Class Needs. “We are thrilled to work with Chevron Canada and the participating school districts to expand the program this year and support more BC students.”
"We are delighted to partner with My Class Needs and the Chevron Fuel Your School program to provide this funding opportunity to innovative classroom projects across the North Vancouver School District," says Superintendent of Schools, John Lewis. "Community partners provide valuable support that enriches our educational program offerings. My Class Needs represents an alignment with our values and goals, and we are excited to see how teaching resources purchased through the Fuel Your School program will complement classroom learning."
During the month of November, when consumers purchase 30 or more litres of fuel at participating Chevron stations located in these five school districts, Chevron will contribute $1, up to a total contribution of $565,000, to help fund eligible classroom projects.
Chevron encourages teachers to post classroom projects for science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education to expand hands-on engagement opportunities and inspire interest in advanced technical careers.
“We are discovering as children grow and learn that science, technology, engineering and mathematics are not separate entities; they are combined and integrated,” says Ms. Burton, principal of Bear Creek Elementary School. “When we give them opportunities to expand their creativity, innovation and work together they benefit greatly from these experiences.”
About Fuel Your School
Fuel Your School is an innovative collaboration with My Class Needs, a Canadian charity that makes it easy for anyone to help support Canadian classrooms. All year, public school teachers can post classroom project requests on MyClassNeeds.ca, ranging from art supplies to computers, and even live tarantulas for use with biology lessons. Individuals and entities can browse project requests and give any amount to a project that inspires them. Once a project reaches its funding goal, My Class Needs delivers the materials to the classroom. For Fuel Your School, all eligible projects are funded on a rotating basis by the order in which they are received and posted on MyClassNeeds.ca.
Teachers and educators from participating schools districts, which receive the majority of their funds from public sources, are invited to post project requests at www.MyClassNeeds.ca beginning Oct. 1, 2014 for possible funding as part of the Fuel Your School program. Consumers can track the progress of posted classroom projects and see how much money is being raised by visiting www.FuelYourSchool.ca. Donations earned through the Fuel Your School initiative will be used to help fund eligible classroom projects from Oct. 1 through Nov. 30, 2014, or until funds generated by this program have been exhausted. Anyone, including consumers and Chevron employees, may also independently fund classroom projects at MyClassNeeds.ca by making separate, individual donations.
