Students in Greater Vancouver to Continue Benefiting from Chevron’s Fuel Your School Program

Collaboration with My Class Needs Foundation has generated $765,000 to fund eligible
classroom projects for public school teachers and students

VANCOUVER, June 17, 2015 – Building on the success of the 2014 Fuel Your School program, Chevron Canada Limited and My Class Needs Foundation today announced plans to continue the Fuel Your School program into the 2015 school year.

Fuel Your School is a collaboration between Chevron and My Class Needs – a Canadian registered charity that uses a crowdfunding website to support students and teachers by providing resources that enhance their learning experiences – and helps provide students with some of the resources needed to help prepare them for success in the modern economy.

Since 2013, the Fuel Your School program has expanded to five school districts in B.C. and generated $765,000 benefiting as many as 32,000 students in the province. In 2014 alone, the program generated $565,000, funded 474 local school classroom projects and positively impacted more than 21,000 students in Surrey, Burnaby, Coquitlam, North Vancouver and West Vancouver. The program was oversubscribed in each participating district with more than a 40 percent over-subscription rate overall.

“With additional resources for classroom projects, there’s no limit to the kind of learning and exploring children can do. Students are going camping, building robotics and making stop-motion animation,” says Amy Coupal, CEO of My Class Needs. “We look forward to continuing our partnership with Chevron in 2015 to fund more projects and to continue to help students engage with the curriculum, learn more about each other and their world.”

In 2014, through the Fuel Your School program, Chevron contributed $1 when consumers purchased 30 litres or more of fuel during the month of November at Chevron stations within each participating school district, up to the total contribution of $565,000, to help fund eligible classroom projects at local schools. A similar funding model will be implemented for the 2015 school year.

“Fuel Your School is a great example of what we can achieve when companies, schools and nonprofits come together to help solve problems,” said Adrien Byrne, Public and Government Affairs advisor for Chevron Canada. “We’re proud that through this program so many teachers and students have benefited by receiving the classroom materials they need for critical learning in subjects, including science, technology and math. The 2014 response was truly phenomenal, and we’re excited to bring this program back in the upcoming school year.”

The focus of the Fuel Your School program is to help support and improve valuable education programming and resources, particularly in the STEM subjects – science, technology, engineering and math. Eligible districts and 2015 Fuel Your School program details will be released at a later date.

About My Class Needs Foundation

My Class Needs is a registered Canadian charity created to support students and teachers in publicly funded schools by providing resources that enrich their learning experiences. Following the crowdfunding models of other successful organizations like or Kickstarter, presents a user-friendly platform where teachers post descriptions of class projects, as well as the expected learning outcome. Donors can contribute to the project(s) of their choosing and help promote them within their networks. Once a project is fully funded, My Class Needs purchases and coordinates its delivery. Teachers and/or students create thank you notes for the supporters of their project, which My Class Needs then delivers to each donor.
