Chevron’s Fuel Your School Program Launches in Five School Districts in Greater Vancouver

Innovative collaboration with My Class Needs Foundation will raise up to $565,000 to support classroom projects in public schools

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA, September 8, 2015 – Chevron Canada Limited (Chevron) announced today the launch of the third annual Fuel Your School program in five school districts across the Lower Mainland. Public schools in the Surrey, Burnaby, Coquitlam, North Vancouver and West Vancouver school districts will be eligible to participate in the program this fall.

Fuel Your School is a collaboration between Chevron and My Class Needs, a Canadian charity, which aims to support classroom projects through a crowdfunding website. Beginning September 8, 2015, public school teachers within each of the participating districts can submit a specific classroom project request at My Class Needs. From October 1 – October 31, 2015, Chevron will contribute $1, up to a total of $565,000, for every 30 or more litres of fuel purchased at participating Chevron stations located in these five school districts. Successful projects will be funded in October.

“Fuel Your School provides teachers an innovative platform to strengthen educational programming and resources. We’re excited to announce that each of the five participating districts from last year will continue their participation in Chevron’s Fuel Your School program,” says Adrien Byrne, Policy, Government and Public Affairs Representative for Chevron. “We’ve seen significant positive results from the program in the last two years as students are given a unique opportunity to benefit from additional resources to support their learning and to prepare them for their future endeavors.”

“The Chevron Fuel Your School program opens up so many possibilities that aren’t easily available to me. I was thrilled to be able to obtain Cubelets Robot Blocks for my kindergarten class last year. The Cubelets were great at encouraging creative thinking and hypothesis testing with our youngest learners.” says Nicola Erasmus, teacher at Bayridge Elementary in Surrey, B.C. “My students were excited to start building simple robots with the new tool. They looked at the activity as fun, but it was also a great way to introduce them to learning about technology and engineering.”

“Last year, we were overwhelmed by the subscription rates from these five districts and have already received significant initial interest from teachers who are planning on submitting classroom projects in September,” says Amy Coupal, CEO of My Class Needs. “We look forward to seeing what types of projects are submitted and achieving our goal of enriching educational experiences for the next generation.”

Since its inception, Chevron’s Fuel Your School program has generated $765,000 for public schools, benefitting more than 21,000 students in each of the five school districts – Surrey, Burnaby, Coquitlam, North Vancouver and West Vancouver. The primary focus of the program is to support projects that are categorized under STEM – science, technology, engineering and math.

“The Chevron Fuel Your School program allows classrooms like mine to access resources that just aren’t easily available. We received four Polaroid Cube cameras and an iPad which we used to make all kinds of movies,” says Shelagh Lim, teacher at Cambridge Elementary School in Surrey, B.C., another recipient of the Fuel Your School program. “As the Cubes are magnetic, we were able to attach them to many different surfaces to get perspectives that wouldn’t have been possible with regular cameras. One of our best movies was of our salmon in the classroom project – with a special case we were able to make underwater movies too!”

About My Class Needs Foundation

My Class Needs is a registered Canadian charity created to support students and teachers in publicly-funded schools by providing resources that enrich their learning experiences. Following the crowdfunding models of other successful organizations like or Kickstarter, presents a user-friendly platform where teachers post descriptions of class projects, as well as the expected learning outcome. Donors can contribute to the project(s) of their choosing and help promote them within their networks. Once a project is fully funded, My Class Needs purchases and coordinates its delivery. Teachers report on the success of their project and may create thank you notes for the supporters of their project, which My Class Needs then delivers to donors.
