Natural Gas from Shale

Providing an Efficient, Economical Energy Source

Natural Gas from Shale

Dismissed as a useless byproduct of crude oil production until the second half of the 20th century, natural gas now accounts for about 22 percent of the world's energy consumption — and demand is growing.

An environmentally friendly and efficient energy source, natural gas is the cleanest-burning conventional fuel, producing lower levels of greenhouse gas emissions than heavier hydrocarbon fuels such as coal and oil. Historically, natural gas also has been one of the most economical energy sources. Natural gas fuels electric power generators, heats buildings and is used as a raw material in many consumer products, such as those made of traditional plastics.

As natural gas is a significant new global energy source, Chevron is pursuing the safe and responsible development of this clean-burning fuel in Canada, the U.S. and Argentina. In Canada, developing natural gas from shale is an important growth area for our business. We are engaged in projects that span the value chain of the natural gas business -- exploration, production, pipeline, liquefaction, shipping, marketing and trading -- through our operated interest in the Kitimat LNG project (exploration, pipeline, liquefaction, shipping, marketing and trading) and the Kaybob Duvernay Appraisal Program (exploration and production).

Shale gas, which is found in the Kaybob Duvernay formation in west-central Alberta, is natural gas that is retained in low permeability, shale rock formations. By combining horizontal drilling and multi-stage hydraulic fracturing, energy companies are now able to extract natural gas from these tight formations.

Chevron Canada is committed to safely and responsibly developing Canada’s unconventional resources while ensuring the highest level of environmental protection. This includes reducing water use, safeguarding groundwater and developing hydraulic fracturing fluids with the smallest possible environmental impact.
